making 'linear pattern' work

I am trying to use 'linear patter' for the first time. I looked in 'help' and followed directions EXACTLY as they are shown, and get nothing, it won't work and just says check input. It is a simple extruded cylinder located on a flat face. How hard can this be. I've done it a zillion times in SW, and its easy!!!!!

You should be able to select Feature Pattern from the list, then select the extruded cylinder feature from the feature list just like SolidWorks.
Can an improvement me made to remember the last setting for patterns and mirrors? I rarely need to pattern a part, but I pattern features all the time. It would also be nice to have some preference settings for such items that can be set globally per user so their preferred settings show up the first time they use a tool.5
