Converting DXF to drawing template

graham_frogleygraham_frogley Member Posts: 1 EDU
My students are required to create their own drawing template as part of their course. We have a simple drawing package we use which will export a DXF of a drawing which I'm looking to import. Question is - how can this be done please? A number of other users on OS forums use DraftSight to do just this, but I don't wish to teach yet another CAD system just to create a template. Any hints and tips please?

Onshape recently added the ability to export a drawing as a template (DWT). The workflow for your students would be:

    - Import the DXF from your simple drawing package into an Onshape document (this will result in two tabs, one "blob" for the original DXF file and one of the DXF converted to an Onshape drawing).
    - Open the new drawing tab (you might want to re-name this tab and adjust drawing properties)
    - Export from the tab menu to export a DWT template file
    - Import the DWT into an Onshape document (resulting in just a "blob" tab).

After that the new template will listed in the Create Drawings dialog.
