How to add a border to text

I made the following keychain as a way to learn how to work with text, etc. Very simple design but it is very time consuming to do the bottom layer to be shaped around the letters. Is there an easier way, other than drawing and manipulating it by hand? If it exists, I would like to know a way to be able to change the text and have the edge adjust accordingly. I hope that makes sense.

For this case, I would try to make duplicate parts of the text that are directly underneath and use 'Move Face' with offset. I started with the text, extruded it, them mirrored it. Then with the move face command, I used the 'Arrow' for the selection commands to easily select the outer faces and offset them a desired amount.
Then sketch on the bottom to clean it up some and do an extrude with a boolean to combine them.
Then boolean everything together

All in all much quicker than drawing it by hand.
