What are the reasons creating a thread could fail?

I tried creating a thread for a screw using a few tutorials. One suggested using any plane and making a triangle to sweep cut from a cylinder. That one didn't work. [The problem just said it was something related to the sketch.] Another tutorial suggested using a point curve plane. That method created part of the thread, but errored out on half the triangle sketch. I modified the sketch, and it was back to not working with sweep at all.

What exactly do I have to do to make a sketch work with sweep?
