I want to make 2 parallel rails 5.25" inches apart, I have tried every thing but cannot do this.
Tried using the linear pattern tool but I dont know how to use it, how do I pick a direction?

There are many ways to do this. If you want to do it with Linear pattern, I've created an example document you could follow: https://cad.onshape.com/documents/fe51d1ce50bbcea5c28ef694/w/8c0501bbc47a83369cab2440/e/9e0c0eb902b9bab14a3f6392
Feel free to copy this document so you can double click on the features and see their inputs.
For the direction, you can select any piece of geometry that clearly defines a direction (for example, a linear model edge or a linear sketch edge define a direction in the direction they are headed and a planar face or a construction plane define a direction normal to their geometry).
In the document I've provided, Linear pattern 1 uses a model edge as a direction, Linear pattern 2 uses a sketch edge (in case any of the edges on your rail aren't pointing in the direction you want to pattern), and Linear Pattern 3 uses the right-side-face as the direction (the normal of this face is the same direction as the previous 2 directions). All these linear patterns produce the same result.
Here is an illustration of the entities I used for direction:Jake Rosenfeld - Modeling Team6
