Regions within parts

I'm looking to start 3D printing parts with multiple extruders using different materials and/or colors.
It would be really handy to have the concept of a "region":
...that would make it a lot easier to think about the overall product geometry separately from the colors/materials in it.
It would be really handy to have the concept of a "region":
- Always exists within the context of a part. A part can have one or more regions
- Acts like a 3D object within its owner part: split, boolean operations, mirror, etc, should all work. The parent part would clip operations that extend outside the part (e.g. mirroring 90% of a cube against a line bisecting a face)
- Features *outside* the part would consider all regions to be the same part ("up to part", etc)
- Transforms, delete part, and part patterns would include all regions within a part
- Toggle to show/hide region boundaries within one or all parts
- Appearance/material would be set per region
- Exports of the part to STL would produce one file per region
...that would make it a lot easier to think about the overall product geometry separately from the colors/materials in it.
