What is the best way of merging parts.

I've simplified this example but often I have two parts which intersect and I wish to merge pieces of them into one part.
Is there an easy way of doing this?  Ideally I'd pick the Boolean tool would just allow me to choose which parts to keep with an interesect.

e.g. how do I go from the top two intersecting pipes to the bottom image. (at present I am intersecting but keeping tools, subtracting the intersection from the two parts, then deleting the and merging the remaining pieces.  Awkward for 2 pipes, a nightmare for multiple pieces!)
