Measurement Tool with Mesh Data

I recently imported a STL file where the resultant in Onshape (OS) a "mesh". I desired to get some basic sizing information from the mesh data by using the OS measure function, but it appears that the OS measurement tool only supports measurements with mesh vertex - not a mesh facet edge, or mesh facet face.
As a work around I created a sketch plane using through 3 mesh points and sketched in lines/arcs through "used" mesh vertices in order to preform the measurements I needed.
I do not see why mesh edges and facets cannot be used for measurement. Is there a reason for this limitation?
