Cannot create boolean, entities not contained

Trying to understand why I cannot create a boolean. I made the three outside pieces, then the middle. But why are they not intersecting?

When an entity of your sketch is fully constrained (AKA has no more degrees of freedom it cam move on), it will turn black.  This is achieved by adding constraints to the entities.  Here is a helpful video on this:

In your Sketch 1, your lines are not constrained.

P.S.
When you finish a sketch, all the lines should be black.
This will usually stop any problems with parts not intesecting

That link takes me back to my document. I am not understanding what you mean about "all black" The only way I see them black is if they are "Used" in another sketch.
