Parts without solid geometry

How can I import a part that doesn't have any solid geometry (only surfaces/meshes) into an assembly so that it can be overlaid as a reference to check newly built geometry to, or align internal components to?
I've been given ID surfaces from another system but am struggling to use them. It seems I have to build the geometry in the imported data part directly, I can't use the surface data as an overlay as the part is not recognised.

It might be messy with many surfaces, but you can save them in a subassembly for simplified organization. However, if all you have is a mesh (STL/OBS file) then OS can't currently import it into an assembly, only a part studio. But considering the multi-body capabilities of OS part studios, that may be sufficient. Just import the STL/OBJ file as a new tab and then use the Derive command to import it into a part studio.5
