What is the best way to handle revisions, should they be a branch off of a branch or a version within a branch?

Regardless of whether you have the revision management (all Onshape Professional users have Revision Management), the mechanisms for revision management are still baked into Onshape.
Every Document, Element, Part, Assembly and Drawing have metadata that includes release state and revision. These can be set automatically using the revision management capability, or set manually for Onshape Standard and Onshape Free users.
