Using a sketch to position parts in an assembly

I've read what I've found about sketches in an assembly but I cannot do it.
What I want to do is that I have several parts and I want to create an assembly out of them based on a sketch, where the sketch specifies the position of the parts. I read that you can 'bring' sketches to an assembly and then attach mater connectors to the sketch item and the use those.
But how do I 'bring' the sketch to the assembly in the first place?
(I'm going to feel such a dummy when it is pointed out to me ...)

In the insert dialogue, there is a filter above the parts that looks like a simple sketch. click it; then sketches will be able to be inserted7
