How to I deselect individual parts in an Assembly?

Say I box-select a bunch of stuff to delete, but want to keep a couple of parts. My natural inclination is just to ctrl+click on them to remove them from the selection, as this is how it works in everything from other CAD and 3D software, to RTS games, to Windows itself.
Is there a shortcut to do this or do I just have to select them in the lister on the left rather than in the graphics viewport?

That works okay if there are only a few parts in an Assembly, but once you get to a few dozen it's tedious, especially if not all the parts are named well. It'd be much easier to just be able to ctrl+click to deselect them in the graphics area in that case.
I thought it was Shift+left click. It doesnt work now though! Dont know why. This is a must have feature.
just click the part and it will deselect. just like it selected it. doesn't seem to work with select other. only in part tree
does seem like an improvement could be had there. to be more intuitive by allowing part vs geometry selections in graphical space. maybe even a filter selection function as well.
I generally hide what I want to keep (with the Y key) them select the rest and delete. Or drag the keepers into a folder in the assembly tree, the. Select the rest in the tree and delete.
