What is the easiest way to be able to copy and edit an Assembly that belongs to someone else?

There are many times when I need to modify parts within a (public) assembly that is owned by someone else.
For Parts, I can Derive them. Is there an equivalent for Assemblies? If I Derive the parts in an assembly, they show up all bunched together in the origin. I would like to have them in the correct Assembly locations. It seems like the method is to export their assembly as a STEP, download it, and import it. If I export it as a STEP to a document tab, can I Import or view that STEP directly from the tab?
Is there a better way that I haven't mentioned?

If its a public document, you should be able to make a copy.

Caden showed pretty much the only way.
This is only possible if the user has made it public and allowed copies, or shared it with you. You can't copy if it is view only.

I exported their model as a STEP, and re-imported it, but was asking for an easier/faster ways to do that. importing from a tab helps, so thank you for that.
