How to remove material under a extrusion

I am designing a tray to hold all my 3/8" sockets and I have included a document that I am practicing on. I could leave the tray as a solid chunk of plastic but was wondering how easy it would be to turn the extruded cylinders into thin walls to minimize the amount of material under the tray. I would like to remove all the unnecessary material under the depressions.

Get rid of extrude 4 and use the "shell" feature.
The more I use this program the more I am hooked. Thanks for the pointer

I made a new item and the shell command appears not to be working for me. Did I use the wrong plane or extrude in the wrong direction when I started this project? Any direction would be appreciated.

The shell is trying to offset the faces of the text and the resulting faces are moving past each other. In general the shell can't use a thickness larger than the smallest "feature" it's tying to offset.
Move the shell to be before the text feature to solve this and make sure your text cut is less deep than the shell thickness.
