My hole does not pierce all extrude layers

robin_langøenrobin_langøen Member Posts: 6

Hi all, i am starting my seccond 3D drawing at the moment, and i'm trying to make some holes.

Hope someone can help me, i can't figure out why my "Extrude 5", and/or "Hole" don't pierce all the way through, it looks like they dont affect "Extrude 1"

"Extrude 5" and "Hole" are the same thing, just used different tools to achieve the hole.

Hope someone has time to check it out and let me know.

    Hey @robin_langøen,

Welcome to the world of 3D CAD 🤩.

Maybe you have fixed it yourself by now but it might have been because you are working with multiple parts and you therefore need to define the merge scope (define which parts are affected by an operation).

It also looks like you are trying to design a Sheetmetal bracket, I think this would be a great resource for you: https://learn.onshape.com/courses/simultaneous-sheet-metal

    Cheers

Extrude 5 and the Hole are both solid features so cannot remove material from the Surface 1 part that was created in Extrude 1.

If your intent is to simultaneously remove material from both the Surface 1 AND Part 1 then there are other approaches you need to use:
    - create Extrude 5 using the "New" option

    • create Extrude 5 using the "New" option
    • then do a Boolean subtract using part you just created with Extrude 5 as the tool, and use Part 1 and Surface 1 as the targets

Yes i did, and was a classic rookie mistake i think..

Just had to turn off Surface 1 :)

    Thank you!

Been having alot of fun just testing things, and will for sure check out some learning/courses.

For this particullar issue it was as easy as turning off "Surface 1"

Thanks for taking your time to respond!
