Hello everyone,

As we have ramped up our sign in page model showcases we have been delighted by the feedback we are receiving. One of the more reoccurring pieces of feedback has been that you want to know more about the companies that we are highlighting. As many of the customers we highlight have done more work with us I will add some insight here about them as we release updates.

This is what I mean, brilliant extra information and now I know what that BOA is. Also good to see that my favorite shoe/boot is also incorporating them, time to go and look at my next Scarpa all round boot.

Also Hyphen…..never thought it would be what it is. I was thinking some computer server tech 😂

Thank you @IgnacioMartos , This is most excellent.

One question though, will this thread be maintained with the new opening pages and links? If not, how to find them? Maybe a link to them on the opening page themselves!

Thank you again, this is really giving a link to getting to know the onshape world. Love it.

nice model. Can free users apply for collaboration to feature a model?

  • IgnacioMartosIgnacioMartos Member, Onshape Employees Posts: 29 PRO

Hello @kees_bijker we are focused on companies building interesting products :)

But we are working with student teams like FIRST Robotics, if you are involved with one of the student teams we can chat about a collaboration!

I am just an independent modeler who has a program I just submitted to be showcased. Our program restores historical locomotives from original build records, and we donate 100% of our time, and the finished display to the museums who have little or no budgets for large locomotive restorations. So we are using todays technology, including Onshape, to restore railroad history. I hope we have an opportunity to tell the story of our adventure.

I totally agree, and hope, that you will get the opportunity. I think it is important that all aspects of engineering get the chance to showcase what they are all about. And preservation of history is important as it is. And locomotives are simply cool so it deserves a chance.

I am only on my own, a machine engineer by day and a 3d modeler and 3d printer by night. I still believe we should also have the chance to show what is possible with only few means. It is not only corporations that do engineering. Yes, I fully understand this is where Onshape gets the money from, but us little home builders might actually motivate youngsters to go into the field of engineering also. It is what connects the future generation of engineers with the reality of engineering.

I am nowhere near ready yet for a showcase model but I do believe that when I am finished with my fully working 3d printable models of the classic Harley Davidson engines like the Knucklehead, the Flathead and eventually the Panhead, they might be worthy showcase material to show people what you can do at home with your modest 3d printer.

Here is hoping that Onshape will reconsider and at least allow us independent modelers to also submit models to be considered. Fair enough if they do not make the grade but at least give us the oportunity.

Wow, that will be nice to see in the flesh. How far will you go with the small details?

I am not as organised as you and my first few models fell apart due to my lack of knowledge. But I am redoing them and learning. Onshape is a beast and if you do it wrong you soon find yourself in the corner without escape.

But like I said, I am learning and I feel my models are becoming more solid and stable.

Here are some screenshots from my knucklehead project:

It has all its internal parts moving and exposed so when you turn the pulley on the crankshaft it all moves as it should. Maybe it will be a nice educational model also, who knows. I make these from photos and lately also original bleuprints. I then optimise the model for printing with FDM and improve it with every attempt to print the parts. Currently on V10 for most parts on this model!

These are from my flathead 45 project: This is my latest so I try to put in action all my lessons from past mistakes, and then make new ones of course.

This model is my latest and is the result of many failures gone before. But I am trying to get it right and build on these mistakes and incorporate the new learned wisdoms so the models I make may be more solid and useful.

One model I did finish is not a Harley but a real model engine by the late Jerry Howell, a very well known, and respected model engine engineer. You can find it for 3d printing on printables here:

    https://www.printables.com/model/714791-working-model-of-the-howell-v-four-engine

    the onshape model:

    https://cad.onshape.com/documents/6ce25bde595a414d9df8a9ca/w/93d8ede0f2fecb22f2edc6ae/e/05acd67c1ef917fee5f58647

This was my first so there are all the stupid little, and big mistakes in it. But it produced a nice 3d printed model of the real thing, even though printing it at that scale is not easy. And the time that goes in to produce the model and then print it is actually more then a year. I also produce a pdf with instructions, bomlist and photos with 3d printing instructions.

I do hope Onshape will reconsider and realise there may be some milage into giving this chance to us independents as well.

What a nice thing to be helping out with while doing what you love best. Amazing detail and for sure it shows the love you put into it. Now I know they should for sure reconsider.
