Light source change in the free version of Onshape.

martin_olesenmartin_olesen Member Posts: 20 ✭✭

Hello,
Is it possible to change or turn off the "light source " that gives the light reflections in the surface, in part studio and assembly in the free version of Onshape?
Kind regards
Martin

No, and it is also not possible in the paid versions. What would that be good for?

Martin Kopplow, i use onshape to make some techinal illustrations and techinal documentation, and there i sometimes would like to have the illustrations without the reflections.

I've often wanted kind of a "white mode" in Onshape - where a diffuse material type is rendered on screen. It would help in illustrations too.

    Yes, i agree romeograham.

It seems not possible to choose pure white in Onshape color palette.

Lots of things! To be able to see how a part looks in a real world lighting setting, for one.

If modelling a vehicle body, usually advanced CAD programs like Catia or NX are used, but for some mid-level modelling, a program like Onshape should be able to handle that sort of task and give the user a good idea of what the part will look like. SW can do that. I've been using Onshape for all of 15 minutes and this is one of the first questions I've searched on the forums.

Cadeso (spelling?) one of the integrated apps will allow you to do some basic rendering on a couple of projects for free…

Wow! 15 Minutes. It could be argued that the light source was already part of a strategy aimimg to make it look more like in the real world. For more quality output and control over lighing there's always an option to open a render studio for any part(s) in question. I sometimes miss a zebra shader in the model window, though.

    @martin_olesen

Well, you can actually choose it (It is FFFFFF or 255/255/255), but the shader, being a shader, will always render it less than white. That is quite common in CAD. Render Studio will accept that as pure white, though.

I agree a "flat" shader could be handy sometimes, especially for shaded view in drawings.

@martin_kopplow , "zebra shader", do you mean something different from the existing zebra stripes option?

It's not possible in the paid version either. I was taking screenshots to make a technical manual, and that light was washing out some of my design when I had the part oriented the way I wanted.

Sorry for being not clear: I'm not fully comfortable with the current zebra shader which requires me to move the model in order to see the effect, but that often leads to a situation where the model has an unfavourable angle just when the stripes are right. We can flip them, but I believe it would be better to rotate them (Ideally hit an option key and rotate them with my space mouse) while the model stays in the current working position. Else, there is a constant switching between positions.

This leads us to the universal question: Are Zebras white with black stripes or black with withe stripes? Onshape Zebras are black. Could they be made white by default? Then, setting the stripes to zero could do what has been requested as a flat shader here! Right now it makes the whole model black, but if Onshape zebras were white, then the whole model could be white when stripe count is set to zero. Would that be a huge effort for the dev team?

color identity is a personal choice of the zebra I suppose.
