how do I apply a circular pattern to a spline? I can't select splines when using the circular pattern. Is there a way around this? I'm trying to copy a curve around
a circle to make a cycloidal gear.

In general, feature patterns are much more flexible, robust and powerful than sketch patterns.
Even better might be to use custom feature for a cycloidal gear so you don't have to do a lot of extra work.

This hasn't been updated in a while so I don't know if any of the recent improvements to spline functionality (higher degrees, approximation, etc) have been used.
