Trimming pieces on the outer edge of a circular object

How do I remove the bits that are sticking out of the outer edge of the circle. Nothing I have attempted has worked - I've already lost a keyboard out of frustration with it… Please do not point me to a video demonstration - I cannot work with that, I prefer written instructions.

Split tool, with outer face as the tool and the grid part as the target. turn off keep both sides, select which side to keep and leave on keep tools.
