Entering Variable name on Sketch Dimension changes view

So on my Mac (tested on multiple Macs) in Safari or Chrome, if you create a sketch shape (for example circle but any will do) and hit return to end the shape and show the dimension data field, if you try to enter a variable name it changes the view (i.e. the # key shortcut is activated rather than the character in the variable name). Am I crazy or are you not supposed to be able to use a variable at that point? I assume something is trapping the "#" key, as it is instant. If you just hit return to accept the shown dimension, then go back and use the Dimension tool, it all works as expected… See image below as soon as I type # the view changes to Left. Note if I had typed a number it would be typing in that field. This is 100% reproducible.

You're not crazy. You need to type a number to activate the dimension field. Then you can delete the number and type #. Otherwise, you will activate the Shift+3 keyboard shortcut for Left. I don't know of a workaround.
Best option is to type use an equal sign (like Excel), that way you don't need to delete anything. It would be nicer if it accepted "#" directly though…
Ah, so hit equals and then #?
Or if you have an existing variable created already, you can just enter equal and start typing the name of the variable, the autocomplete will show the option even without the #.
