how can I change the extrude preset, it is set to thin witch is rather annoying I want to set it to face

Conveniently, the Extrude feature will remember what selection you used last. Create a Solid Extrude and the next time you create an Extrude, Solid will be selected. "Face" is not an option.
No it doesn't happen to me, it stay on thin I have just checked.

It only swithes if you complete the feature. Just setting it and then quitting will not save the state.
Not , if it should work and it works for you, it is strange behavour i use firefox browser
