I am doing the tutorial where you use loft to create a funnel and can't get sketch 2 to work

When I create the offset of 0.05" for the ellipse on the lower surface plane of the rim and handle (step 4), I get a gray ellipse offset as expected inside of the rim, but with gray (nothing) filling the space between the rim and new ellipse. In the tutorial illustration, however the space between that ellipse is blue, like the rim. I think this is the reason I can't get the funnel loft to work (get a red funnel before excepting and nothing after excepting, except an error that it can't solve). This isn't surprising, since the funnel is attaching to the inner ellipse, which isn't connected to the rim, with that 0.05" gap. If I use the upper surface plane of the rim to create sketch 2, it works, but the funnel is solid. I have tried everything I can think of, but can't get the the offset ellipse on the lower plane to connect to the rim, as in the tutorial illustration on step 4. I have spent 3 hours on this step, so far.
What is the issue?
Thanks

Does this help?
Hi Matt,
I'll see what I can do with that info. The selection of the inner edge of the rim seems to be what's asked for and I click on it and the edge line is all that turns orange, so I seem to be selecting the right thing. It's when I do the offset, in the tutorial they show the region between the offset ellipse and the rim edge is blue, but mine is empty. I chose the sketches for the loft from the Features list.
Thanks,
I tried playing with the disable imprinting. Don't see any difference in the outcome. This is what the rim looks like with the offset ellipse resulting from the plane being selected on the surface of the rim, clicking on the center of the rim. Same result if I choose the surface plane by clicking Sketch 1 in the Features list. No joy.
I just posted this, but it doesn't show up here in the thread. (?) This is how the drawing looks after creating the offset on the bottom plane. This is with disable imprinting. Didn't matter. I tried choosing the plane from clicking on the lower surface of the rim at center with it zoomed out about an inch wide as well as on sketch 1 in the Features list. No difference. Tried selecting the plane by clicking in the middle of the handle as well. You can see the offset is on the lower plane, with clear space between the offset and the rim.
Ah, your sketch offset is in the wrong direction.
You drawing above has offset of 1.27. Is that mm? This makes the most sense to me, as the funnel needs to be part of the rim's width. The instructions seemed to call for the opposite, however.
I tried reversing the direction, like that and I get no error (tried every variation I can think of), but the funnel is solid.
Oh my god. I just looked at the next slide (step 10) and it's there you make the funnel open in the middle! Jeez, I never looked ahead to see that. It would be nice if each step in the tutorials showed what the final state should look like, so you know what you're shooting for. I got this end point 2 weeks ago. Oh well, you live, you learn, hopefully. Sorry, but that's.
On the offset instruction, I interpreted, "away from" to mean from that edge away from the rim, so towards the center.
yes!
I tried that just to see what would happen. Doesn't work either, of course.
