How do I bring in a part from another document into the current workspace?

A quick answer would be great, but are branching and merging what I need to study?

You want the Derive feature to add a part reference to a part studio to use for modeling. If you want to add it to an assembly, you just use the Insert feature.

I'm a raw beginner. I can't figure out where the derived feature is. It's not on the toolbar. I clicked the add feature button in the toolbar and it opened several examples but I didn't see an add button so i could try one.

"Derive" is in the Part Studio list of features near the top of the page, between the Mate Connector and Variable icons.
