Can't sketch on selected sketch plane

When I select the top surface of an extrusion "Face of Extrude 1" the eclipse I sketch onto it is placed on the top plane instead. If I choose any other face such as bottom, front, back or sides, the sketch is placed there as expected. How can I place a sketch on the top face? Thanks for your help.

You can only sketch on planar surfaces. The top of that shape is not planar. If you want an ellipse on that top face, you can use the Split tool.
