    Entry #6 by @Derek_Van_Allen_BD
(Using the latest IRL rendering platform! Incredibly photorealistic — though the “render set up time” was probably measured in days!)
While this entry isn’t a digital render, it’s such an outstanding piece of carving art that it absolutely deserves recognition in the Hall of Fame if voted in. For contest purposes, if this one is voted in, we will also move to the next highest-voted entry that qualifies as an actual render.

Had to re-post since new pages keep getting created..

@Derek_Van_Allen_BD Either way, your carving is awesome! 😎

    .

Thanks @EvanReese! And thanks for kicking off the voting! It's really nice to have the ice broken.

My vote will go to Entry #3 by @mlaflecheCAD with a strong head nod of approval to @Derek_Van_Allen_BD's sheet metal skillz.
The variety of pumpkins and cinematic lighting really captured the theme.

I will say the scariest pumpkin by far is @eric_pesty's.

@EvanReese That's an accurate read on the process. Essentially I just forked the default sheet metal start feature and removed all of the geometric safeguards to try to shove unusual surface geometry through the sheet metal kernel and see how it builds, which is how I was able to do conic sheet metal a few months ahead of time before they went public with that feature. It turns out that the whole 3d side of the script will run more or less perfectly even though it'll fail at producing a flat pattern representation of the sheets, so if you get it to the 3d stage you can do an offset surface and flatten that to get yourself your exports for production. Corner reliefs and edge geometry apparently never need to hit the 2d stage to meet up correctly to form a corner to corner welding joint.

I then reimported these flats to Onshape for easy document control, and this is where I wish there were an option to export flattened surfaces to a different tab to avoid the reupload step. I could have easily stuck to .dxf exports and done the rest outside of onshape but there was a version of this I thought about making 3d printed dies that held the flats for forming operations until I ultimately ended up just using the 3d pieces for that purpose.

Mostly I was curious to put Surface Flatten through its paces and inspired by a comment from @bryan_lagrange in another thread to do a metal lamp in the most extra way I possibly could.

@GWS50 Your browser must be blocking the embeds. I've updated the post so that it defaults to a standard gif, then has the option to click the imgur link in case those gif's aren't working.

Can't make up my mind yet and will have to think some more. Either #1 or #5.

It’s gotta be number 5 for me

I have to say #6 is definitely the most realistic looking one by far 😁! Not to mention the effort that went into this so @Derek_Van_Allen_BD gets my vote even if there might have been a bit rule bending (and welding, ahah)!

Winner of the Shapey will need to record an acceptance speech and post it once the Shapey is in hand. 😁

I have to vote for #6. The realism is so good you can't tell it from the real thing. 😂

    @Derek_Van_Allen_BD
Here are a few points for your acceptance speech:

First, I would like to thank all the developers at Onshape. Without you, none of this would have been possible.

Some may say that I didn't use a “rendering engine.” But if “simulation theory” is correct, then taking a photo in our reality is similar to using rendering software.

Coming down to the wire. Will @Derek_Van_Allen_BD win the first Shapey????? can @MichaelPascoe make a last minute comeback????? and will @sebastian_glanzner get sheet metal loft in the next Onshape update????? we will soon find out……… except for the sheet metal loft functionality. Sorry Sebastian.

I'm honored. I was gonna do the acceptance speech as a forum post but that would be too low effort for such an entry, so I'll follow up with a video when I get the Shapey in hand and save my material for then.

This was a fun competition, I'd love to do more of em in the future and keep the forums lively. Maybe even some that are more modeling or build oriented challenges for people that are into that side of things (and to keep people like me from bending the rules in this one).

Mr. Obvious. I don't want your crown. Skipping turkey day I see. Just like the big box stores. smh.

I'm just playing around. Carving looks sick. The pumpkin munching on a baby pumpkin is a classic. Or is that an Onshape bell pepper?
