combined rotational and linear movement

I have just modelled a TriviThick Loco, and am quite happy with the animation of loco itself, now I would like to run it on a track. I have set a test assembly just with the track and carriage, applied a 'tangent' constraint between a wheel and the track, but ended up with rotational movement of the carriage still, so I applied a 'parallel' constraint between the carriage and track. In the past I have completed a tutorial somewhere of a model with wheel running on a track (board) using Tangent and Planar constraints but I can't get it to work here. Any help much appreciated.

Simplify it, by just running the carriage assmbly along the track (with track being representd by a curve or set of curves), then use a rack-and-pinion relation to turn the wheels.
Thanks martin, i think I have solved my problem using this simple example;

The problem I had was setting the Min and Max values for the movement in the planar constraint
Again thanks for advise
Thanks for advise Martin. The main problem I was having was too many constraints, I have simplified another example but have problem aligning mates and setting limits

I have solved my problem; I used a Planar constraint between the underside of carriage and sleeper then used the "Rack and Pinion" relationship between the 'Planar constraint' and 'revolve' on the front wheel.
