Something to be aware of- Issues with students changing documents

john_knoxjohn_knox Member Posts: 6 EDU

I've been using the classes and mostly love the ability to have students submit assignments through the system. I've been having a couple of issues and I'm not sure of the solution. When I create an assignment using one of the Onshape lessons, I copy it to my documents. The issue is that by default it puts them into the shared space "Mr. Knox" at the top level of my file space. ALL of the students automatically have edit privileges' for these docs. I had a couple of students try to access the document through the main panel and not through classes. They changed the document and changes showed up in the link in the assignment. So the link is not static, and students can change what is in the assignment. What is the best way to control what students can see and how they have access to the documents?

Hi Mr. Knox. I'm glad that you're getting use out of Onshape Calsses & Assignments. There is certainly a solution to the issue you are describing. Onshape's document sharing and permissions scheme can be a little nuanced, but you should be able to create document copies for students without granting them edit privileges.

For starters, if you create a copy of an Onshape document, you should have the option of making that document "Owned by me."

That way, no one can see the document.

If you attach that document to an assignment (submission option 2, "Students begin with copy of selected document") then the document will be shared with students only with view/copy permissions. When they start the assignment, a copy of the document will be made for them and shared with you. But they still don't have edit permissions on the original.

The only way I could see students winding up with edit permissions is if you are copying documents into a folder which has been shared with the Classroom with edit permissions. Like in the picture below. Maybe that's it?
