How can my right-panel app get the currently-selected face?

my simple right panel app registers for SELECTION notifications upon initialization, and this works fine. But there’s a usage scenario where the user selects a face before opening the app.
It would be great if upon initialization, I could request to be told about the current selections. I GUESSED that this is what the ‘requestSelection’ API request was for. But the docs indicate no required params — yet without params it throws errors. I finally got it to accept the call with a bunch of para,enters but none that make sense. I think I guessed wrong what this API does.
Any help? Better doc pages? Running examples?
