CAM Program Options (If not CAM studio, what?)

At my college we are in the process of getting a big proper five axis CNC machine.

My colleague (top CNC chap and previous SW user) is asking me about CAM in Onshape, and is wanting to buy Solidworks and SolidCAM (?) licensees.

A little inside me is dying at this thought. I would rather not, but, what CAM software would people recommend if we are spending the money on licensees.

I don't think an Education enterprise license comes with the CAM module, does it?

Any insight? Help?

    Is 5-axis even available in CAM Studio yet?

    It may not be a good option for you, but I've been using Ency CAM for my 4-axis hobby work and it has several other available modules including robotics, welding, EDM and some other. I got it fairly inexpensively with a Tormach mill about 20 years ago and have been upgrading it ever since for much less than $1k per year. There is a US vendor, if that matters, and the company in Cyprus does have a number of posts available and seem to be willing to create new ones.

    The Education Enterprise does come with CAM Studio. But not 5-axis (Cam Studio Advanced).

    @Domenico_DiMare thank you for clarifying.

    I appreciate I'm asking for rival software... But what would you recomend which plays nice with Onshape?
