  The main interesting thing would be saving some of the overhead of downloading the STEP and uploading the STEP, especially if there are a lot of parts you need. If it optionally downloaded the 2D PDF at the same time, that would be really nice. Setting the metadata such as material(s) could also be advantageous.

  It would be great if the "actual" website opened in a panel and you could just insert in one step, maybe an option to map some properties in the process.

  They [McMaster] have a Solidworks add in to let you quickly and easily insert a part in Solidworks. We use McMaster-Carr constantly. This would be a huge advantage to us versus having to go through all the steps of manually downloading a CAD file, etc.

  Is it possible to write a code to download the STEP of an MMC part number and overwrite the Name, Part Number, Vendor, and Description to the imported STEP file to show on BOM?

  To get the dumbsolid, you manually download from MMC. This has always been the easy part.

  The metadata has been the tough part.

  Yes! this looks like a great implementation - pulling in properties / specs is a nice touch.

  This is stellar already, one possible improvement would be to import all of configurations of a particular product at once into the same document and create a document tab that switches between the import target studios with a single derive feature to create swappable configurations of things like fastener length or pipe size in an assembly like the standard library content has. @MichaelPascoe and I worked on a method for doing so manually from my company's catalog of scraped McMaster stuff from Solidworks.
