Why can't I extrude this face?

Took a short recording of my attempt to Extrude a face that was just created using Thicken:
As you can see there, I can select the face (and it's called a "face") when I don't have Extrude selected, but can't select the face when setting up an Extrude. I don't see any particular indication that the face or part is different in some way. It looks shaded so its a solid part, right? Anyone know why I'm not able to Extrude this face? I can actually also select the face if I start a 2nd Thicken operation, but not Extrude.
If I'm missing any particular obvious indication I may just not be aware of it, so feel free to call any of those out. :)

Thicken works on non-planar faces whereas Extrude does not. Most likely the surface you thickened is just ever-so-slightly non-planar.
