Why can't you define a mate connector with another mate connector?

I've missed that option, too, especially when designing moving parts. Then, mating MCs with each other, would open up a wide field of possibilities.
It's not the primary purpose of my custom Poly-Mates feature, but it does have that one-line edit integrated into it so you can create mate connectors in reference to other mate connectors. Sometimes I use it to do position copying across assembly contexts.
