Base model and variable change

I am looking for a way how to derived a part and change height variable.
I am designing set of boxes for electronics. All of them have same base model, but with different height.
The simplest way is to use derived feature and change the height variable. But this is not possible right now.
So I am copying the base model into set of models with different height, which I am using later for the final models.
But updates of the base model is tedious work:
1. update base model
2. create derived models with different heights
3. in final model delete previous derived feature and replace it with new one
4. fix all issues in final model
Is there a simpler way how to do this?
