Inserting holes using in context.

Could anyone give little advice please. I am trying to add holes to a tread in an assembly using edit in context. The holes go through three sections and appear fine but when asked for merge scope I am not able to select the parts as they are greyed out. Does this mean this action is not possible or is there something I am doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated for me to move on.
Best regards Brian.
