Link Two Assembly Mate DoF's for Animation

With a cylindrical mate is is possible to link the Z-axis translation AND rotation degrees-of-freedom to animate both simultaneously? So far I can only animate translation, or animate rotation, but can not animate both together.

Apply a rack & pinion or some other sort of relation perhaps?

A rack and pinion is your best option for coupling those motions. Unfortunately, you can't select the sliding and rotation components of the cylindrical mate to care the relation. The way around this is to create a "dummy mate" that duplicates the first cylindrical mate (with the same mate connectors and no limits). Then, select the sliding component of the first mate and the rotating component of the dummy mate to form your rack and pinion relation. Animating either mate will show the relationship you need.
