Thanks to Nick & Jelte above for advice. I find that my shell workaround still meant having to manually tell all the extrudes which faces to terminate at, but further down the timeline, there are a lot of errors unrelated to the shell - even separate parts consisting of simple extrudes have failed. christopher_day719, An extrusion failed implies that the result of the extrusion operation did not result in a valid geometry.
