How to correctly organize a purchased component that needs motion?

I have been putting purchased or "standard" components in a separate documents to link into whichever project they are needed in case they needed to be used in multiple projects. (Bearings, shoulder bolts, anything not included in Onshape's standard library)
Inside the linear actuator document, I have made an assembly of the rod and body of the actuator mated by a slider mate with limits.
What are best practices for utilizing a purchased component that needs to be comprised of more than one part body?
Would you apply part data (manufacturer, part number, etc) to one part body and call the other part body a reference part or exclude from BOM?

and I didn't see the "assembly" tab when inserting the linked document.
