Extrude/Thicken Issue After STL To STP Conversion

I have STL files of objects that were scanned and I was able to convert them to STP, however once imported into OS, I am running into issues.

I can extrude or thicken the face, but when it does so, the edge of the part has thousands of faces associated with the extrude/thicken, and it is causing issues when I try to fillet the new outer edge.

Is there a smoothing operation I can run on the edge prior to extrude/thicken to make it one face?

No - STL is faceted which is what you see. Converting it to STEP makes no difference. Best thing to do would be to model around the STL data to create a clean BREP model.

Thanks for the insight, I will "go back to the drawing board" and see what I can do to clean up the STL.
