How do I control what gets created into a "part"?

In this document I'm working on Part 5 is actually what I would like to be two separate parts -- one face of the cube and the other a pyramid (preferably a separate part for each of the pyramid but I'm still figuring out the whole pyramid thing separately). How do I control what is established as one part vs. another?
