Possible to configure non-geometry items for BOM's?

We have been using assembly configurations to manage product color options. However, we are finding that there may be broader organizational advantages (costing models, etc.) to managing color options as a BOM item instead. I was wondering if it were possible to leverage assembly configurations for non-geometry BOM items? Thanks!

You can't configure the item, but you can configure qty and suppression states.
Should be enough
