Way to automate an assembly (i.e. working on a feature script for #35 chain)

I'm playing with feature script and making #35 chain. I can easily make the parts. I realize that feature script is not a part of assemblies but wondered if there was a way to automate the process - for example I can easily create an assembly to make a chain but would love to specify the number of links and automate the process. Not worried about animating the chain at all. This is simply a project to develop my own skills.

It doesn't move/rotate, of course....
