As admin for a educational enterprise - I have edit privileges for all students.  I'd like to have the option to open their file as view only so that I don't mistakenly modify their work.

@kate_leipold_rit Opening documents is governed by our share options.  It might be best to have your folder permissions have View only for teachers.  Today we are not looking at having permission modes outside of the share options.  Are you wanting to have edit rights sometimes as well?  The best option for teachers would be to open that last version or micro version to look at theiir work which would avoid being in any edit mode.

Alternatively, you can look at the history tree, and if you've made any inadvertent changes to the main workspace, just undo back to before you opened the document.

@kate_leipold_rit have the students create a version for grading. Then review the version. Since versions are immutable, it is not possible to accidentally change the model. Plus, any comments made get tied to that specific version and students cannot make further changes after a due date.

Having them make a version is a very good idea. Alternatively, you can open a version directly from the Documents overview, by using the flyout on the right side. That way you can open the students' version directly:

Great ideas!  Thank you.  I already have them create a version - so I'll use that next time I jump in.  We share by URL to a course LMS  so I don't open from the document page, but I will remember that option.

Also, if they have made a version, if they navigate to it in the history of the document and then select the URL, it will send you directly to that version when you click on the link. If you ask them to copy the version's link into your LMS, then you won't have to do any extra clicking: just open the document and start grading!

For what its worth, I do think it would be useful to have a faster way to open documents either at the latest version or micro-version. I'd even go so far to say that I'd prefer it to be the default way a document is opened. I'd much rather click an extra button when I want to edit something than risk accidental edits.

I get worried when I open document that has released drawings and I see the little yellow "update" icon. I know I haven't intended to change anything in the model, but a history tree full of hide/unhide and playing with the roll-back bar makes it hard to confirm that I haven't accidentally changed anything.
