What is Tap Clearance?

alexcalexc Member Posts: 7
Hello,

I'm using the Hole tool to produce a Tapped 3/8-24 UNF thread though I'm unclear what is meant by "Tap Clearance" which seems to be defaulting to 3? The item we'll be threading into this hole has 0.75" of thread, so we'd like 1" of thread ideally. How does Tap Clearance affect this?

Thanks

Tap clearance determines the hole depth, so you are specifying the important dimension, thread engagement (tap depth) and a clearance (hole depth past the thread depth) by TPI

Ah perfect I see. So with a Tapped Depth of 1" and a Tap Clearance of 3, OnShape calculates the hole depth as 1.125" (with 0.125" being the height of 3 of the threads). Thank you
