In Assembly 1 of the document, I have combined an assembly (Group 1) with a mated part and grouped them as Group 2
I added another part and mates, and combined everything as Group 3.
Creating Group 2, causes the earlier Fastened mates to become undefined.
Suppressing Group , causes the Fastened mates to become defined again.
Whats going on?

Basically you will be just using the fastening mates as positioning tools. Only issue here is if modified in the future you may lose the intent as the part is re built. Not sure why the fasten mates throw errors with the group mate, suppose its jest telling you that its over constrained.
I'd also be fixing 1 of the parts, RMB on a part and Fix.
Why don't just do all the parts in the the 1 studio? Then bring all parts into the assy in position, I could understand if you want to repeat common parts but here that is not the case.5
