The reason @john_mcclary doesn’t like tablets is because he’s a power user. A big-time power user. He needs that speed & full function that a desktop or keyboard computer will give him with Onshape.
The mobile app doesn’t have all of the features or all of the abilities of the browser version of Onshape. For instance, there is no setting up of a configuration spreadsheet or table on mobile. No sheet metal VIEW. Sheet metal tools on mobile yes, but no sheet metal FLAT view. And there’s a number of other things like curvature that are not on mobile
But for a retired person, a hobbyist like myself, I love the mobile app. I can’t stand sitting at a stinking desk (LOL) for long periods of time. And I can’t walk around holding a laptop and try to use Onshape. It ain’t gonna work — you have to find a place to set that laptop. So everybody has their point of view
But after you see John‘s work, you’ll understand why he wants a keyboard and mouse or trackpad. Because he’s known for doing some pretty heavy duty stuff. Things that are going to take full functionality and a lot of input at times. So having a keyboard and mouse to do his type work is necessary
Get the best iPad you can. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it with Onshape. I love it on my 8+ iPhone where I can throw my iPhone in my pocket — go outside, lean against the wall and use Onshape there if I feel like
And — I’ve always got my MacBook Pro for when I need the browser version of Onshape
And besides, there are some other great apps that work on an iPad
LumaFusion - Video editing
Auria Pro - Multi-track audio
Affinity Photo - Photoshop type app at a great price
Affinity Designer - Illustrator type app at a great price

Here is a GIF where I was using a generic type of stylus with my iPhone 8 plus. The GIF looks a little jerky because there are dropped frames — a result of making longer GIF’s with the GIF app that I use. The video that I used to make the GIF was very smooth. I would’ve posted that video but you have to have something like a YouTube channel to host the video and then link to it via the Onshape forum. At least that’s what I think you have to do. I don’t have YouTube or any other type of channel. That’s why I post GIFs directly to this forum
But I think this GIF illustrates that I was having no problem using the generic stylus on my LARGER screened iPhone
If you have one of the smaller iPhones, it might be hard to use Onshape on that. I’ve never tried using Onshape on a smaller iPhone
Normally, I never use a stylus when I’m using Onshape. I just use my fingers on my iPhone 8+ because it works great for me that way
Also, I believe you have to use a newer iPhone to use the Apple brand stylus
If I was using an iPad, I might use the stylus. I might not. I’m used to using my fingers on Apple’s touchscreens
It might be that touchscreens work for some, and they don’t work for others
Maybe it is best for you to use a computer with a mouse.
i bought an galaxy tab 8 for other things. trying onshape. how does the view stuff work. I cant seem to pad around. the stylus works for selection but not a lot else. Anybody?
