How to add Part Number to an Item?

Is there any way I can add an auto-generated part number to an item I created as company owner?

I have created this Item under company items (I have renamed "Part Number" to "Art. Nr."). We do not want to model certain parts, but we still need a part number in our main assembly BOM. Because of that, I want to auto-generate a sequential Art. Nr. for the item by clicking the Nr. symbol (see image below). Unfortunately I cant find a way to auto generate this number for items, it is only available in the properties dialogue of parts, assemblies and drawings. I can manually input a number, but I dont want to do that since then it would be possible to have duplicate numbers.

I know I could work around this by creating small blocks and assigning them an article number. Then I could insert them into my assebmlies, but I don't really like that option, as it is a messy way to do this IMO.

Items are meant to be static references to common parts you typically don't want to model. Like glue, tape, edging trim, wire, hose.

But i think you may be able to assign an auto part number in the bom after you place it.

If not, then try inserting an empty assembly for each item. Then pattern it for qty. That way you won't have stray parts floating around your model.

The BOM will only show those parts as structured though.
