Setting dimension on construction lines causes other constrained lines to change

Having a bit of trouble here, I needed to shorten the overall length of a part ("lower") in the sketch "lower body" by about 1.5 mm so I created a dimension which said the current length was 45.456 and set it to 44 mm. The rest of the part I thought was constrained as all lines were black. When I changed the dimension  to 44mm the part got squished and I am not seeing how to set the constraints such that only the overall length will change. In hindsight, I should have created a variable for this dimension and used it in the beginning.

It's just not dimensioned right from a design/mfg point of view.

Plus the sketch is too detailed - would be better split up into several for robustness.

Hmm, ok. How did you determine that if you have time to explain. Need to learn how to do that!
