I am trying to create a conical funnel, and then add some parts to it.

Hi, I am trying to have a conical funnel so it is hollow inside, and then to add some parts to the outside. However trying either a revolve, or a loft does not allow me to either wrap onto the surface, or even when i extrude the cone shape and try to shell it, this dosen't work either. What am i doing wrong?

Although the second document below is not a cone, this is another way of going about wrapping something (so to speak) onto a shape other than a cylinder
