I am having trouble using the animate feature for the mate in the third image. Please help!

    You want to animate the screw? It would just be the same as the other screw in this assembly.

    but to animate the screw with a slider action as well.  to truly make the screw follow the threads ( I know it needs the cylindrical mate) but also have it follow a slider mate pattern as well.  It won't allow me to make the screw action up and down following the thread pattern.

    Just set the distance per rev = thread pitch. You can't pull the screw and expect it to spin, you have to rotate it.
